Sanskrit is the ancient language of the seers and sages of ancient India. The major authoritative scriptures of yoga philosophy, the mantras we meditate with and the chants we chant are all in this wondrous language. The Sanskrit language has a primordial and powerful vibration. It's 50 basic sounds are vibrating in our 6 chakras. Due to its powerful and purifying effects, mantras and prayers are chanted in their original form and not in a translated form.
For those interested in deepening their understanding of the philosophy, mantras and chants, having a basic understanding of the Sanskrit language is very helpful.

I highly recommend the Introduction to Sanskrit course taught by Gajananam at the Vishnu-devananda Yoga Vedanta Center. After just a few short weeks, we were all able to read and write the Devanagari script, and begin to pronounce Sanskrit. The coursework is very methodical and relevant to yoga, as it was specifically designed by Dr. Sarasvati Mohan with yoga practitioners in mind. Gajananam is a patient and helpful teacher, who guides us well and gives quality feedback about our pronunciation and writing skills. Unlike learning from a textbook or videotape, learning directly from a teacher has proven to be much more effective and productive. This course is helpful for yogis and yoginis looking to deepen their understanding of yoga, as Sanskrit is the language of this practice.
I loved this course! I came to the center with no knowledge of Sanskrit whatsoever, and now, after having passed through level one and part of level two, I find myself reading and pronouncing the language with confidence. Learning with Gajananam is such a gift, as it is obvious that he is as passionate about teaching Sanskrit as the students are about learning it. The classes in Berkeley are small, flexible, and able to be tailored to the needs of individual students. And studying weekly provides an opportunity to really digest the material slowly -- something an intensive study program cannot offer. I would recommend this program to anyone interested in Sanskrit, especially its applications to yoga and meditation.
